This is a tree with frozen spider webs. After a few conventional shots that didn' t give anything interesting, I picked up my fisheye lens, my flash and tried to get something interesting.

Ceci est un arbre avec des toiles d'araignées gelées. Après quelques photos conventionnelles qui ne donnèrent rien d'intéressant, j'ai pris mon fisheye, mon flash et j'ai essayé d'obtenir quelque chose d'intéressant.

My D200 camera body is still at Nikon's repair service and I don't have any new material to post. Nevertheless, giving a second look at older shots is always interesting. It may help find some hidden gems...Although this shot taken in Venice is not perfect, I like it and hope you'll like it too.

Mon boitier D200 est toujours au service réparation de Nikon et je n'ai pas de nouvelles photos à poster. Néanmoins, jeter un second regard sur des clichés plus ancien est toujorus intéressant. Cela peut aider à trouver des trésors cachés...Bien que cette photo prise à Venise ne soit pas parfaite, je l'aime bien et j'espère que vous l'apprécierez également.

This is a shot taken in Switzerland, near Geneva. I have been taking many shots of this place during thze past few years but never managed to get one that really satisfies me. Although I'm not completely pleased with this one, I like the angle of view and the fact that there is no visible human being here. I like the fact that you can imagine so many different kind of people living there, just by looking at their balcony.

Voici un cliché pris en Suisse, près de Genève. J'ai pris beaucoup de photos de cet endroit au cours des dernières années, mais je n'ai jamais réussi à en avoir un qui me satisfasse vraiment. Bien que je ne sois pas totalement satisfait de celui-là, j'aime l'angle de prise de vue et le fait qu'il n'y a aucun humain visible. J'aime le fait que l'on peut imaginer tant de personnes différentes vivant là, rien qu'en regardant leur balcon.

I got a Nikon D700 for the week-end. I mounted my 50mm on it and did a few tests with natural light. This photo has not been cropped. The bokeh is entirely natural. It was taken at ISO 1600! Although the image quality for such high ISOs is great, I processed the file in Noise Ninja to get rid of some digital noise in the shadows (there's still some, but I kind of like it). The black and white conversion was done in Lightroom, then I ajusted the contrast and darkened the peripheral areas of the image in Photoshop.

J'ai eu un Nikon D700 pour le week-end. J'ai monté mon 50mm dessus et ai fait quelques tests en lumière naturelle. Cette photo n'a pas été recadrée. Le bokeh est entièrement naturel. Elle a été prise à 1600 ISO ! Bien que la qualité d'image à de telles ISOs soit très bonne, j'ai passé le fichier dans Noise Ninja pour éliminer du bruit numérique dans les zones sombres (il y a en a encore, mais je l'aime bien). La conversion en noir et blanc a été faite dans Lightroom, puis j'ai ajusté le contraste et assombri les parties périphériques de l'image dans Photoshop.

Since I moved my photoblog to PixyBlog almost two month ago, I have "met" new people and my photoblog has taken a new departure. This is very encouraging and I am very happy to see that great people and great photographers are posting on PixiBlog's forum and on photoblogs hosted on the platform. I also was lucky to discover some very interesting photoblogs and very talented people. Thank you for all this.

This little ball of light

I took this shot early on Sunday morning, just before my D200 fell down in the pond. The Nikkor 12-24mm severely touched the ground and broke a little piece of metal in the lens mount of the camera body. After cleaning and drying every single element, my camera body can't autofocus with zoom lenses anymore. It only works with fixed focal lenses. I'll have to get this fixed soon...or buy a D300...?

J'ai pris ce cliché tôt dimanche matin, juste avant que mon D200 ne tombe dans l'étang. Le Nikkor 12-24mm a violemment touché le sol et a cassé une petite pièce métallique dans la monture d'objectif du boitier. Après avoir nettoyé et séché tous les éléments, mon boitier ne fait plus l'autofocus avec les zooms. Cela ne marche qu'avec les objectifs fixes. Je vais devoir faire réparer cela prochainement...ou acheter un D300...?

Sun Bath

That's the second decent shot I got from yesterday's walk in the woods near Orleans. This one was taken with a typical autumn morning sun, with a cold air and dew everywhere. Although almost every piece of vegetal is now colored in yellow, dark red or brown, I perceived these nice little green leaves with backlighting. I only discovered the little spider lying on the sunny side of the leaves after I put my macro lens on the camera. What a surprise!

Voici le second cliché correct pris lors de ma marche d'hier dans les bois près d'Orléans. Il a été pris avec un soleil typique d'automne, avec de l'air froid et de la rosée partout. Tandis que pratiquement tous les éléments végétaux sont colorés en jaune, rouge foncé ou brun, j'ai aperçu ces jolies petites feuilles vertes en contre-jour. Je n'ai découvert la petite araignée côté soleil qu'après avoir placé mon objectif macro sur l'appareil. Quelle surprise !

I had the opportunity to go out take a few shots in the woods this morning. I'm quite please with this one, which is the shot of a cut tree with an orange mark (made by the forest ranger). I found it had a strange and somewhat scarry aspect, that made me think it looked like a sort of human face, made of wood.

J'ai eu la possibilité d'aller prendre quelques photos dans les bois ce matin. Je suis assez content de celle-ci, qui est la photo d'un arbre abattu avec une marque orange (mise par le garde forestier). J'ai trouvé qu'il avait un aspect étrange et un peu effrayant, qui m'a fait penser à une sorte de visage humain, constitué de bois.

I took this portrait in Venice, in February 2008. Although the ambient light was very bad, thanks to a little fill-in flash, I'm quite happy with the result.

This is the only decent shot of a series I took last Thursday in the Park of Chambord. We are now at the end of the bellow season, when Red Deers are doing their mating ritual, called the rut. This is a fantastic animal behavior to observe and listen to.

C'est le seul cliché décent parmi une série que j'ai prise jeudi dernier dans le Parc de Chambord. Nous sommes à présent à la fin de la période du brame, pendant laquelle les cerfs font leur rituel d'accouplement, appelé rut. C'est un fantastique comportement animalier à observer et à écouter.

An unexpected host on a pool shutter. I used my recent SB-800 speedlight on the camera, with its diffusion dome to fill-in the scene. I'm pretty satisfied with the result here, given to the very short time I had to set up the lighting on this ephemeral scene.

Un hôte inattendu sur un volet de pisicine. J'ai utilisé mon récent flash SB-800 sur le boitier, muni de son dôme de diffusion. Je suis plutôt satisfait du résultat obtenu étant donné le peu de temps que j'ai eu pour mettre en place l'éclairage sur cette scène éphémère.

Have you ever been to Paris? I have been living in Paris for more than 35 years (I don't live there anymore) but I have never seen such a view before! One of my closest friends opinion after he saw this photo was to say that it was a digital manipulation. It is not a digital manipulation, it is a real view. I had the chance to visit the "Réservoir de Passy" last sunday, during the Heritage Days ("Journées du Patrimoine"). This is the biggest reservoir of non drinkable water of Paris. It is made of several vaulted rooms under the ground and three large pool outside. This reservoir has been built in 1858 and operated since 1866. It captures the water from the Seine river and distributes it all over Paris. The main usage of this water is sprinkling in the parks and cleaning the streets. This is an HDR shot made with Photomatix Pro from three bracketted views. Post-processing is simple: a slight crop, levels adjustments and a curve for contrast. A slight color enhancement for cyan and yellow and then I added a vignette.

Avez-vous déjà été à Paris ? J'ai vécu à Paris plus de 35 années (je n'y vis plus) mais je n'ai jamais eu une telle vue auparavant. Un de mes amis proches m'a dit après avoir vu cette photo que c'était un trucage, une manipulation numérique. Ce n'est pas un trucage, c'est une vue bien réelle. J'ai eu la chance de visiter le Réservoir de Passy dimanche dernier durant les Journées du Patrimoine. Il s'agit du plus grand réservoir d'eau non potable de Paris. Il est composé de plusieurs salles voûtées en sous-sol et de trois grands bassins extérieurs. Ce réservoir a été construit en 1858 et mis en service en 1866. Il capte l'eau de la Seine et la distribue sur l'ensemble de Paris. Les utilisations principales de cette eau sont l'arrosage des parcs et jardins et le nettoyage des rues. Cette photo est un HDR, faite avec Photomatix Pro à partir de trois vues brackettées. Le post-traitement est simple : léger recadrage, ajustement des niveaux, une courbe pour le contraste et un renforcement de la couleur pour le cyan et le jaune. J'ai ensuite ajouté une vignette avec Lightroom.

A little hope

This tree was put down by the windstorm of 1999. This very strong storm went over France, Switzerland and Germany on december 26, 1999 with winds up to 256 km/h. More than 100 people were killed and the storm, also called Lothar, caused extensive damage to property and trees and the French and German national power grids. Thousands of tree were destroyed, even big centenary oaks like the one of this shot. Curiously, all the broken tree in the park where I took this photo were removed, except this one.
Hint: this photo is best viewed with the dark theme.

Cet arbre a été abattu par la tempête de 1999. Cette tempête très puissante a touché la France, la Suisse et l'Allemagne le 26 décembre 1999, avec des vents allant jusqu'à 256 km/h. Plus de 100 personnes ont été tuées et la tempête, également appelée Lothar, a provoqué des dégâts importants aux propriétés, aux arbres et aux réseaux électriques français et allemand. Des milliers d'arbres ont été détruits, même de gros chênes centenaires comme celui sur cette photo. Curieusement, tous les arbres détruits dans le parc où j'ai pris cette photo ont été enlevés, à l'exception de celui-ci.
Conseil : cette photo est mieux visualisée avec le thème sombre.

This is one of my last shots taken in July between Belle-Ile and the continent. On the sea, light can be very changing and the difference between day and night can be thight. This shot has been post-processed exclusively in Adobe Lightroom 2 (this is unuasual for me as I ALWAYS do some PP in Photoshop). I used the black & white conversion tool, added a slight blue tint, enhanced contrast and lighting using the contrast tool. I then used the graduated filter tool to give the sky a more dramatic look. I hope you'l like it and am open to any question or comments. I think this photos is best viewed with the dark style

This is another shot taken on Belle-Ile, the french island on the Atlantic coast.

I hesitated between the original 3x2 format and the more panoramic 16x9 format, which, at least in my opinion, suits more this shot.

The post-processing was : black & white conversion in Lightroom, editing in Photoshop for contrast and luminosity curves and slight yellow cast. There was a specific curve for the sky, anotherone for the water and I lightened up a bit the hills on the left.

A little bit of information for this shot : This is another shot taken on Belle-Ile. I took it in July on top of the "Phare de Goulphar" or Goulphar lighthouse. This lighthouse is also called "Grand phare de Kervilahouen". This light house was built in 1836 and plans were made by the french physicist Augustin Fresnel. It is entirely built with granite blocks, wich had to be brought by boat, because granite doesn't exist on Belle-Ile island. The Goulphar lighthouse is one of the most powerful lighthouses in France. Its light is visible up to 26 miles (around 48 kilometers) away. After climbing its 247 steps that bring you about 52 meters above the ground (and 92 meters above the ocean), you'll have a fantastic view of Belle-Ile and the coast of Britanny, from Le Croisic to Lorient.

Hi everybody !

So this is my first post since I moved my photoblog to Pixyblog yesterday. I am very happy to be on Pixyblog and to share with some great photographers I've seen here. Fortunately I could move all the photos and comments I got back from 2005 when I started to photoblog.

Everything is running smoothly and I want to thank the nice fellows of Pixyblog's team, who gave me some directions in order to migrate my existing data. You can read more on this subject here and here.

About this shot : I took it in July on Belle-Ile, a french island in the atlantic ocean. Belle-Ile means "beautiful island" and it really deserves its name. The story behind this shot is that I took it while walking under the sun to get to my car and go back to pick up my wife and son who were exhausted afer a 3 hours walk in the land. They couldn't walk anymore, so I left them in a shady place, picked up my camera (but left the camera bag with all my equipment) and walked another hour under the sun to get to the car...This shot was taken on the same little road where I also took this one. The cows were on the right side, the ocean was on the left side of the road.
