This is the first photo of my trip to Beijing that I feel like showing (and from where I'm currently posting it). This statue is one of several commemorations of the Ming tombs along the Sacred Way. I found this place very calm and the atmosphere very solemn.

For those who like this food (I do), this is paradise. Despite the lighting conditions, I'm pretty happy with the result, even though it was shot at iso 2000 with the D300s.

I think this photo is best viewed with the dark background.

This painting has been made by Salvador González Escalona (everyone calls him Salvador), a Cuban artist who began to paint the walls of his neighbourhood in Callejón de Hamel (Hamel's Alley) back in 1990. He also paints beautiful things on canvas. Read more about Salvador here (beware, heavy page).

Sunsets over the sea ar common, but I like this one. It makes me feel quiet and wonder when will be my next opportunity to shoot the carribean light...Especially when it's grey and rainy here.

This scene is the kind of instant that I like to immortalize. It could be the end or the beginning of a story. The temperature of the air was very high. The dog was out. The lady wore high heels and could barely walk. Another day in Cuba.

Orlando is a descendant of the african slaves that were brought to Cuba at the end of the 18th century to work in the sugar cane plantations. Orlando still lives at the same place as his ancestors, very close to the plantations.

First level: the composition and characters are interesting. The colors are a bit flashy.

Second level: a teenager walking barefoot in the street, but with a trendy bag and a cigarette in his hand. He looks at the meal (without being able to reach it) which is served to the couple of tourists who look quite uncomfortable (this is confirmed by a zoom on the original image). This very colored context hides a huge poverty. The dog who is also banned from the restaurant has already got it. He is looking in another direction.

Premier niveau : la composition et les personnages sont intéressants, les couleurs de l'image, un peu criardes et tape-à-l'oeil.

Second niveau : un adolescent qui marche pieds nus dans la rue, avec cependant un sac à la mode et une cigarette à la main. Il regarde, sans pouvoir l'atteindre, le repas servi sur la table du restaurant au couple de touristes qui ont l'air assez mal à l'aise (le zoom sur l'image originale le confirme). Ce contexte très coloré masque une image de profonde misère. Le chien, lui aussi interdit de restaurant, l'a déjà compris. Il regarde ailleurs.

This man was not really holding up the stairs, but considering the state of this construction, climbing these stairs seemed a very dangerous experience. The sign of his hand is not saying "Money, please", but he was imitating me with my finger on the shutter release of the camera.

I took this shot on top of the Hotel Raquel in Havana. The B&W conversion was done in Lightroom and the file was imported in Photoshop for further editing.

This is the first photo from my trip to Cuba. This island is great. Loved the people, their kindness and hospitality. There are so many beautiful landscapes and urban areas to photograph in Cuba! I wish I could go back someday. This shot was taken in Havana while driviing from the airport to my hotel.

I like this shot very much because the light is completely natural and consisted only of the available light in the restaurant where I had this desert. And unlike what you might think, I didn't shoot with a macro lens, but with the (superb) Nikon 17-55 f/2.8.

On another matter, I haven't posted much here recently because I was busy setting up and lauching iPhone-Shots.com, a social network for iPhone photography. If you haven't done it yet, check it out.

This photo also looks better with the white background (to change the background color, click the "Set style" box in the upper right corner of the page).

J'aime beaucoup cette photo car la lumière est complètement naturelle et a consisté uniquement en la lumière disponible dans le restaurant où j'ai mangé ce dessert. Et contrairement à ce que vous pourriez croire, elle n'a pas été faite avec un objectif macro, mais avec le (superbe) zoom Nikon 17-55 f/2.8.

Une dune de sable, un beau ciel nuageux avec une lumière un peu dure, une branche morte, un peu d'inspiration et voici cette photo, probablement la dernière de mon voyage à Fuerteventura en avril. Pour le traitement, il y a un HDR de trois photos brackettées, un passage en monochrome à l'aide de l'outil noir & blanc de CS4 puis plusieurs courbes avec des masques de fusion pour le contraste du ciel et du sable. J'aime le résultat final. Et vous ?

A sand dune, a beautiful cloudy sky with bright light, a dead branch, a little inspiration and here is this shot, probably the last one of my trip to Fuerteventura in April. Regarding post-processing, there is an HDR conversion from three bracketed shots, a convertion to monochrome using CS4 black & white tool then several masked curves for contrast in the sky and in the sand. I like the end-result. And you ?

Je pensais initialement faire un HDR avec les trois prises de cette scène (c'est à Fuerteventura, encore...) faites à des expositions différentes. Mais l'absence de trépied m'a empêché de faire une pose longue et cela a fait persister les irrégularités de l'eau dans l'image. Si j'avais fait un HDR, ces irrégularités étant différentes d'un cliché à l'autre, le résultat final aurait été un aspect de flou, probablement inesthétique. Etant donné que cette scène est difficile à exposer correctement pour un capteur de Nikon D200, j'ai donc choisi d'utiliser le ciel du cliché le plus sous-exposé et l'eau du cliché le plus sur-exposé. En mettant ces clichés sous forme de calques dans Photoshop et grâce aux masques de fusion, il a été très facile de "mixer" des expositions différentes d'une même scène. Le reste du traitement a été de corriger en contraste, niveaux et colorimétrie.

I initially thought of making an HDR from the three shots of this scene (it's in Fuerteventura, again...) taken at different exposures. But the lack of a tripod prevented me from doing a long exposure and that kept the irregularities of the water in the image. If I had done an HDR, these irregularities being different from a shot to another, the final result would have been a probably unaesthetic blur. As this scene is difficult to expose correctly for a Nikon D200 sensor, I chose to use the sky from the most underexposed shot and the water from the most over-exposed one. By putting these shots as layers in Photoshop and with the help of layer masks, it was very easy to "mix" the different exposures of the same scene. The rest of the post-processing was to ajust contrast, levels and a color correction.

Bien qu'ayant encore plusieurs photos prises à Fuerteventura dignes d'êtres postées ici, j'ai pensé qu'il fallait varier un peu et passer à autre chose. Aujourd'hui, je mets en ligne la première photo d'une série prise au domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire, lors du festival international des jardins qui se tient tous les ans. Malgré une météo assez peu favorable, j'ai pu faire quelques clichés sympas.
C'est également aujourd'hui que je change pour la première fois (depuis que ces informations sont rédigés en deux langues) l'ordre du texte relatif aux photos (ce que vous êtes en train de lire). La version française apparaît maintenant avant la version en anglais. En effet, les statistiques du site montrent que les visiteurs d'origine francophone sont trois fois plus nombreux que les autres. J'espère que les anglophones qui visitent régulièrement http://photoblog. jacquesbron.com ne m'en tiendront pas rigueur.

Although I still have some shots taken in Fuerteventura that mights be posted here, I thought I needed to change a little bit and to move to something else. Today, I'm putting up the first shot of a series I took in May at the domaine of Chaumont-sur-Loire, during the international festival of gardens. Despite a rather bad weather, I could take some cool shots.
It is also today that, for the first time (since this information is written in two languages), I change the order of the text I write about the photos (what you are reading). The french version now appears before the english version. In fact, the site's statistics show that there are three times as many french-speaking visitors than non-french speaking visitors. I hope that english-speaking people that come to http://photoblog. jacquesbron.com on a regular basis will not bare me a grudge for that.

This is one of the two statues located on top of a hill bear Betancuria, the ancient capital of Fuerteventura. This is a pseudo-HDR made from a single raw file processed into three tiff files with different exposures. The HDR processing is a bit stronger than what I usually do, but I think it serves well the sensation of power and the massive look of the subject. Please let me know what you think.

This is a shot of a vineyard in Lanzarote. This Spanish island, is the easternmost of the Canary Islands, in the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 125 km off the coast of Africa. The island is volcanic, hence the black color of the ground which is mostly composed of volcanic debris. The wind blows very strongly on Lanzarote and in order to grow, grapevines have to be protected by c-shaped walls. The vision of these unusaual grapevines was very stangre, as if people wanted to grow grapevines on the moon (wine tasting gave me the opportunity to discover very interesting wines !).

Voici une photo d'un vignoble a Lanzarote. Cette île espagnole, est l'île des Canaries située la plus à l'est, dans l'océan atlantique, approximativement à 125 km de la côte d'Afrique. L'île est volcanique, d'où la couleur noire du sol qui est essentiellement composé de débris volcaniques. Le vent souffle très violemment à Lanzarote et l'élevage des vignes nécessite de protéger les pieds par des murs en demi-cercles. La vision de ces vignes inhabituelles était très étrange, comme si l'on voulait faire pousser de la vin sur la Lune (la dégustation m'a permis de découvrir d'excellents vins !).

This shot is the first of this yellow wall. It is rather abstract and I'd say, unexpected. The second one I'll put up soon is completely different. This is not the same beach as on Untitled #38, but both are on Fuerteventura island. I haven't got new material to post, but still have some shots from my trip at Fuerteventura that are worth posting (at least on my opinion).<hr />

No new shots recently (and the weather is terrible here...), but I still have a few decents shots from my Fuerteventura trip. This one is one of my favorite in this series. I haven't really experienced long exposures with water before this one but I am quite pleased with the result. Please let me know what you think.

Je n'avais pas vraiment expérimenté les poses longues avec de l'eau avant celle-ci mais je suis assez satisfait du résultat. N'hésitez pas à me dire ce que vous pensez.

That's fine because I didn't manage to take new material recently...Today's shot is a bit different. I like that small red car surounded by the desert, the ocean and the mountains. This salt march is different from the one visible here, here or here. These ones were taken in Guérande, France, today's shot was taken in Salinas del Janubio, Lanzarote, Canary Islands. Unfortunately, the salt industry has now almost disappeared from Lanzarote.

Ce marais salant est différent de celui visible ici, ici ou ici. Ces derniers ont été photographiés à Guérande, France, celui d'aujourd'hui à Salinas del Janubio, Lanzarote, Iles Canaries. Malheureusement, l'industrie du sel a maintenant pratiquement disparu de Lanzarote.

I took this shot of a white church in the north of Fuerteventura with my Nikon D200 and the Nikkor 17-55mm lens at 200 ISO. I took three bracked shots at f/11. The raw files were converted with Ligthroom, then exported to TIFF files. The HDR work was done in Photomatix Pro. Then I post-processed the resulting file in Photoshop with levels and curves layers to make it more "punchy". The vignette was added in Lightroom.

I haven't been able to shoot any new material during the last weeks so this photoblog has been very static lately...Now I'm back with new shots I took last week at Fuerteventura, one of the Canarian islands. I mostly shot landscapes and still life, so this one is a bit different from the others I'll be putting online during the next days.

Je n'ai pas pu prendre de nouvelles photos durant les dernières semaines, donc ce photoblog a été un peu statique...Je suis maintenant de retour avec de nouveaux clichés pris la semaine dernière à Fuerteventura, une des Iles Canariennes. J'ai surtout photographié des paysages et des natures mortes, donc celle d'aujourd'hui est un peu différente de celles que je mettrai en ligne au cours des prochains jours.

Sorry for not posting any new material recently. I have been very busy at work and am now off for a few days. I have been to the Geneva International Motor Show, which is the first car show of the year in Europe. The photo I'm putting up today was taken there, on the Opel booth and the fingers are my son's. This shot has not much to do with cars and motors, but I like it...So it's for you today.

I'm still showing some photos taken in Canada last December, as I haven't managed to shoot anything new since Christmas! This shot was taken in the suburbs of Quebec city. It is sometimes strange for us french to see that in Quebec people have worked so hard to preserve the french language in everyday's life. As an example, in France you would never see such a sign. The word "Stationnement" is french indeed, but in France, everybody uses the word "Parking". Who's right ? Who's wrong ? I don't know. I love the english language, as shown by my bilingual explainations on this blog, but I like to see these french words taking back the place of our everyday's life anglicisms.

Je continue de montrer des photos prises au Canada en décembre, car je n'ai pas réussi à prendre de nouvelles photos depuis Noël ! Ce cliché a été pris dans la périphérie de Québec. Il est parfois étrange pour nous français de voir qu'au Québec les gens ont lutté si fort pour préserver la langue française dans la vie de tous les jours. Par exemple, en France, on ne verrait jamais un panneau tel que celui-ci. Le mot "Stationnement" est français, bien sûr, mais en France, tout le monde utilise le mot "Parking". Qui a raison, qui a tort ? Je ne sais pas.
